Murmur - racehorse - Caulfield Cup winner 1904Racehorse Murmur was foaled in 1899 and was by 1886 Melbourne Cup winner Arsenal out of the mare Millstream (by Town Moor)

His main win was in the 1904 Caulfield Cup that was worth £2500 for his millionaire owner John Wren who reportedly won £51000 from the bookies when he backed him from 150/1 to 10/1.

He then backed Murmur to win a fortune in the 1904 Melbourne Cup but he finished 24th behind Acrasia – promptly losing more than half what Wren won on him in the Caulfield Cup.

John Wren was allegedly the “capitalist symbol” John West, written of so scathingly in the 1950 novel Power Without Glory by Frank Hardy.
